Arpad Okay call this post-hardcore, all the genres you’d otherwise use to describe it came after. the melancholy lends real beauty to the silence that hangs after the rush. what a moment in time! immaculately produced live energy. the professional engineering of a studio release, the raw power and development of a band on tour, the connection between the guys in melodic conversation with each other gets so strong even the band playing it disappears, and there’s only the music, perfect. Favorite track: She Laughed She Died.

about

In 1997 we knew that the band was coming to an end. Noah planned on leaving Pittsburgh for Austin & it felt like we’d done & said everything we set out to. We had a good batch of new songs but not enough for a full album. None of us are totally sure what the specific influence was anymore but the basic plan was that instead of making a new record in a proper studio, we’d record all of the new songs along with a few old ones in a live setting and release it that way. After a few years of regular touring we’d become a proper scorching live band & we wanted to capture that. We asked Bob if he was interested & giving it a shot which he was so we set it up for our home away from home The Empty Bottle in Chicago. The set & recording went mostly as planned but for some reason we almost immediately scrapped the live album idea & a few months later and made “We Are Quiet In This Room” in our rehearsal room at my parent’s house in the North Hills of Pittsburgh. The two ADAT tapes from the show moved around with me until 2022 when I found a guy outside of Chicago that could bounce them out & then Bob agreed to mix it. I’m glad that we decided to make a proper third record but I’m also very glad this exists. Playing in Hurl was one of the best times of my life and I think this sounds more like our band in my memory than any of the studio albums do.
